The REAL™ Methodology
Research. Evidence. Analysis. Leading Action.
Every recommendation begins with understanding, not assumptions.
The REAL™ Methodology reflects how Impact Work Solutions approaches research-informed consulting and every client engagement. Rather than relying on predetermined solutions or one-size-fits-all frameworks, REAL™ provides a disciplined approach to understanding each client’s unique circumstances before recommendations are developed.
REAL™ is not a proprietary formula that guarantees identical outcomes. It is a professional framework that emphasizes research, evidence, thoughtful analysis, ethical decision-making, and practical implementation.
Better Decisions Begin with Better Understanding
Every organization operates within its own environment. Goals, people, culture, resources, operating conditions, and previous experiences all influence whether a proposed solution will work.
For that reason, Impact Work Solutions does not begin with a predetermined answer. REAL™ provides a disciplined framework for understanding the situation, considering relevant research and evidence, analyzing what those findings mean within the organization’s context, and identifying practical actions that can move the organization forward.
Understanding comes before recommendation.
The REAL™ Framework
These four connected disciplines guide how IWS moves question from research to practical action.
Research
Begin with credible knowledge relevant to the question. Research helps establish what is already known, where findings are consistent or contested, and what deserves closer examination.
Evidence
Consider what the organization itself tells us. Available data, documentation, stakeholder perspectives, operating conditions, and other relevant evidence provide the context needed to understand what is actually happening.
Analysis
Bring research and organizational evidence together. Analysis examines relationships, differences, constraints, risks, and possible explanations rather than assuming that a single metric or observation tells the whole story.
Leading Action
Translate understanding into practical direction. Recommendations should reflect the evidence, organizational realities, available resources, and the people responsible for carrying the work forward.
What the REAL™ Approach Means for You
1. Understanding Before Recommendations
IWS begins by understanding the question, relevant research, and what is actually happening within your organization before recommending a course of action.
2. Your Organization Shapes the Solution
Organizational priorities, people, resources, constraints, culture, and operating conditions affect what will work. Those realities are incorporated into the analysis rather than treated as secondary considerations.
3. Evidence Is Examined in Context
A metric, survey result, interview, or research finding rarely tells the whole story by itself. REAL™ brings multiple forms of evidence together to develop a more complete understanding.
4. Recommendations Must Be Practical
A theoretically sound solution has little value if it cannot be implemented. Recommendations account for organizational capacity, resources, risks, and the people responsible for carrying the work forward.
5. The Goal Is the Right Solution, Not a Standard Solution
IWS does not begin an engagement knowing what the answer will be. The objective is to identify a course of action supported by research, organizational evidence, analysis, and the realities of the organization.
We do not tell you how you should operate.
We shape our recommendations around how you operate.
Guided by Professional Commitments
The REAL™ methodology grew from the professional commitments that guide IWS: understand before recommending, follow the evidence, communicate honestly, respect each organization’s context, and focus on solutions that can work in practice.
Those commitments also include making high-quality professional support accessible to smaller businesses and nonprofit organizations. Organizational size should not determine the rigor of the thinking behind the advice. It should influence how that expertise is delivered.
IWS therefore looks for ways to meet organizations where they are: focusing engagements on the problem that needs to be solved, working within practical resource constraints, and avoiding unnecessary scope, extended commitments, or services that do not add value.
Ethics Before Engagement
Professional advice carries an ethical responsibility. Recommendations should be honest, transparent, and guided by what we believe is in the client’s best interest. Client interests come first.
Research Before Recommendations
We seek to understand what credible research and relevant professional knowledge can tell us before recommending action. No canned solutions.
Evidence Before Assumptions
Conclusions should reflect the available evidence. Where evidence is limited, mixed, or emerging, that uncertainty should be acknowledged. Follow what the evidence shows.
Understanding Before Recommendation
Effective recommendations begin with understanding the people, goals, operating environment, constraints, and realities of the client. Context shapes the answer.
Implementation Defines Success
A recommendation has limited value if it cannot be realistically implemented and sustained. It has to work.
Continuous Learning
New research, new evidence, and practical experience should continually improve how we think and how we serve clients. Better evidence, better practice
Right-Sized Engagements
The scope of an engagement should be driven by the problem and the organization’s needs, not by the size of the potential contract. IWS seeks focused ways to deliver meaningful value without creating unnecessary work or long-term dependency. Fit the work to the need.
Small businesses and non-profit organizations deserve serious thinking too. IWS was built around that belief. We look for the level of work the problem actually requires, do that work rigorously, and give clients recommendations they can use. If a focused engagement is enough, we will not turn it into a larger one just because we can.
From Understanding to Action
REAL™ is ultimately about making better decisions. Research provides perspective. Organizational evidence provides context. Analysis helps determine what those findings mean together. Leading Action turns that understanding into recommendations that can be put to work.
The result is not a predetermined answer or a standard package of recommendations. It is a clearer understanding of the issue, the factors influencing it, and practical options for moving forward.
Good advice should help you decide what to do next—and why.
